Which beverage is your favorite? If you have not tasted boza then I strongly recommend you to drink a cup of it. So, here is another reason of visiting Istanbul: Boza!

Boza, also known as bosa, is a popular drink in Istanbul. It is a type of fermented beverage also known in Kazakhstan, Albania, Montenegro and Bulgaria. There are various types of boza but originally it is a malt drink. It has low alcohol content and a thick consistency. It has been prohibited by some Ottoman Sultans as it contained a degree of alcohol, though a minimum degree.

In 1867, Haci Ibrahim and Hacı Sadık established their first boza shop in Istanbul. The shop is still in business today. Boza is also sold on the streets by street traders. Especially during long winter nights, they walk around the city and try to sell boza kept in their churns.

Boza tastes great but this is not the only reason of its popularity. It is believed by many that drinking boza enlarges women’s breasts. It is also considered as a drink that helps you to get over some illnesses such as sore throat and flue.

2 / 101 Reasons to Visit İstanbul

Istanbul is known as the pearl of the world. It is such a remarkable, fascinating and breathtaking city that every year millions of distinguished travelers all over the world visit this destination. The city offers numerous cultural, religious and entertainment attractions. Whatever you are looking for in a city is available here and now. Here are 101 reasons to visit Istanbul!

Istanbul is the city where the East meets the West It is the meeting place of two continents. Both geographically and culturally Turkey is part of both Europe and Asia. Cross over a bridge and you are in Asia or Europe. So, here is another reason to visit Istanbul: Bosphorus Bridge!

The idea of a bridge crossing the Bosphorus dates back to antiquity. As recorded by Heredotus, the famous Greek writer, Emperor Darius I the Great of Persia was the first to dream about a bridge that stretched across the Bosphorus. For him, Samos engineered that pontoon bridge, between the lands of Asia and Europe. The first permanent bridge project was proposed during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. This project involved a rail link between the continents as well. Yet, the decision of building the bridge was made by Prime Minister Menderes in 1957. A British firm called Freeman Fox and Partners shouldered the structural engineering work. The construction of the bridge began in 1970 and was completed in 1973.

Today around 180,000 vehicles pass daily in both directions. Besides transportation the bridge has other uses as well. The Intercontinental Istanbul Eurasia Marathon is being organized each year. Visitors to Istanbul can also sign up for fun run if they are interested in this marathon and happen to be in the city in October. A world tennis figure, the U.S. tennis star Venus Williams played a show game on the bridge. This was the first tennis game played between two continents. Another sports celebrity, David Coulthard , the British Formula One driver, drove his racing car on the bridge. If you visit Istanbul, do not miss the chance of seeing where the East meets the West.
